Japanese aluminum imports hit a new high this year in October as buyers entered the market to replenish inventories after months of waiting. Japan’s raw aluminum imports in October were 103,989 tons, up 41.8% month-on-month and 20% year-on-year.
India became Japan’s top aluminum supplier for the first time in October. Japanese aluminum imports in the January-October period total 870,942 tonnes, down 0.6% from the same period last year. Japanese buyers have lowered their price expectations, so other suppliers turn to other markets.
Domestic aluminum production was 149,884 tons in October, down 1.1% compare with last year. The Japan Aluminum Association said. Domestic sales of aluminum products were 151,077 tons, up 1.1% increase compare with last year, the first increase within three months.
Imports of secondary aluminum alloy ingots (ADC 12) in October also hit a one-year high of 110,680 tons, up 37.2% increase year on year.
Auto production remained largely stable and construction was weak, with the number of new homes falling 0.6% in September to about 68,500 units.
